Appliance Electricity Cost & Power Consumption Calculator – How It Works
Understand your home's electricity usage, appliance by appliance
What Is an Appliance Electricity Cost Calculator?
Have you ever looked at your electricity bill and wondered — which appliance is eating up all my units? You're not alone. Most people in India know their monthly bill amount but have no idea which device is costing them the most. That's exactly where this appliance electricity cost calculator becomes useful. This tool lets you select the appliances you use at home — like a fan, AC, refrigerator, TV, or geyser — enter the number of hours you run them daily, and instantly get an estimate of how many units each device consumes and how much it costs per month. Unlike a basic electricity bill calculator that takes total units as input, this tool works from the appliance level upwards. It's more detailed, more personal, and gives you a much clearer picture of your actual electricity usage.
How Does This Power Consumption Calculator Work?
The calculation behind this tool is straightforward. Every electrical appliance is rated in watts — for example, a ceiling fan is usually 75 watts, an AC is 1500 watts, and an LED bulb is around 9 watts. To find out how many units (kWh) an appliance consumes in a month, we use this simple formula:
Units = (Wattage × Hours per Day × 30 Days) ÷ 1000
Once we know total units from all your appliances, the cost is calculated using your selected state's official tariff slabs — exactly the way your electricity board does it. This means the estimate you get is as close to your actual bill as possible.
Example: A 1500-watt AC running for 8 hours a day for 30 days = (1500 × 8 × 30) ÷ 1000 = 360 units per month. At ₹6 per unit, that's ₹2,160 just for the AC alone.
How to Use This Calculator – Step by Step
- Select Your State: Choose your state from the dropdown. This loads the correct electricity tariff slabs for accurate bill estimation.
- Choose Connection Type: Select Domestic or Commercial depending on your electricity connection type.
- Add Your Appliances: Click on "Add Appliances" to open the appliance selection panel. Check the boxes next to the appliances you use. You can edit wattage, daily hours, and quantity for each device.
- View Units & Cost Per Appliance: As soon as you apply your selection, the table shows each appliance's monthly units and estimated cost separately.
- See Total Bill Breakdown: Scroll down to see the complete bill breakdown — energy charges, fixed charges, meter rent, electricity duty, fuel charges, and the total estimated bill.
- Customize Tariff Slabs: Click "Edit Slabs & Charges" to manually adjust rates if your actual tariff differs. All changes are saved in your browser automatically.

Example Calculation – Real-Life Scenario
Let's say your home in Jharkhand has the following appliances running during summer months. Here is how the monthly electricity usage and cost would look:
| Appliance | Watt | Hours/Day | Monthly Units | Approx. Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AC (1.5 Ton) | 1500W | 8 hrs | 360 kWh | ~₹2,160 |
| Ceiling Fan × 3 | 75W | 12 hrs | 81 kWh | ~₹486 |
| Refrigerator | 200W | 24 hrs | 144 kWh | ~₹864 |
| LED TV | 100W | 6 hrs | 18 kWh | ~₹108 |
| Geyser | 2000W | 0.5 hrs | 30 kWh | ~₹180 |
| Total | 633 kWh | ~₹3,798+ | ||
Note: This is an approximate estimate. Actual bill may vary based on official tariff, meter readings, and additional surcharges from your electricity board.
Common Home Appliances – Power Consumption Chart
Not sure what wattage to enter? Here's a quick reference for typical home appliances used across India. These are standard values — your actual appliance may vary slightly. Always check the rating label on your device for accuracy.

| Air Cooler | 150–250 W | 36–60 kWh |
Difference Between Estimated Cost and Your Actual Bill
This calculator gives you a very close estimate of your electricity bill, but the actual figure on your bill might differ slightly. Here's why:

Tips to Reduce Your Electricity Bill
A regular ceiling fan uses 75 watts. A BLDC fan (like Atomberg) uses only 28-35 watts — that's almost 60% savings. Similarly, replacing incandescent bulbs with 9W LEDs reduces lighting costs drastically.
Every degree below 24°C increases AC power consumption by about 6%. Setting your AC to 24-26°C instead of 18°C can save you 20-30% on cooling costs every month.
TVs, phone chargers, and set-top boxes on standby still consume power — known as "phantom load." Unplugging or using smart plugs can eliminate this invisible usage.
A 2000-watt geyser running for just 30 minutes a day adds about 30 units a month. Use solar water heaters or insulated geysers to cut this cost significantly.
BEE 5-star rated refrigerators, ACs, and washing machines consume significantly less power compared to 1 or 2-star models. The extra upfront cost pays off within 1-2 years in electricity savings.
